Aden: Coordinator of Localization and Recovery Initiatives Discusses Partnership With Ministry of Finance on Economic Reforms

Mr. Hussein Al Suhaily, Chairman of Tamdeen Youth Foundation, Coordinator of the National Economic Recovery Program, and Coordinator of the Humanitarian Action Localization Initiative in Yemen, called for rebuilding the economy, supporting public institutions to provide priority services, develop local resources and meet financial challenges with a common vision and a coordinated and comprehensive strategy shared by government actors, local authorities, the private sector and CSOs.

During today’s meeting in Aden with Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Budget Sector, Mr. Mukhtar Al Suraihi, and Under-Secretary of the Ministry for Finance, Revenue Sector, Mr. Naji Jaber; Al Suhaily stressed the need to begin the recovery and development phase and to reduce reliance on foreign assistance and emergency humanitarian interventions.

He noted that the collapse of public resources and the cessation of oil exports contributed to impeding the development and worsening the humanitarian crisis.

He also called on the Government to review spending on purchased energy, expand renewable energy, reform the education and health sectors, be accompanied by plans for more inclusive and meaningful investments, and solve the public debt problem.

He noted that the discussions of recovery and reconstruction should not be the preserve of international actors, as the reconstruction of Yemen will only be by Yemenis.

The Under-Secretaries of Ministry of Finance have valued the initiative of TYF and its leadership for the role of civil society in sharing responsibility with the Government and supporting its efforts to overcome economic challenges.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to activate channels of communication and joint coordination to come up with a program of work in accordance with participatory planning.
