Early Warning Enhancement and Disaster Risk Reduction System in Abyan Governorate

Under the auspices of the Governor of Abyan Governorate, Major General Abu Bakr Hussein Salem, and in cooperation and coordination with the Office of Social Affairs and Labor, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-YEMEN), in partnership with Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF), held two workshops in Khanfir and Zanjibar districts on "Disaster Risk Reduction and Community-Based Flood Early Warning System for Water User Associations". 

 

In the two workshops, attended by the Director General of Zanjibar District Sheikh Shaya Al Dahouri, Director General of Khanfir District, Lawyer Mazen Al Yousefi, Director General of Social Affairs and Labor in Abyan, Dr. Fidel Manzouk, Director General of Water Resources in Abyan, Mr. Hussein Al Fadhli, Director General of Environmental Emergencies at the Public Environmental Protection Authority, Mr. Jamil Moqbel, and a number of engineers and specialists from agriculture and irrigation, Al Kood Research Center, and Public Works. 

 

Participants learnt about components of the Early Warning [System, coordination and communication mechanisms, and the sharing and timely use of information and data for communication and warning of climate variability. In addition to the means of developing plans for disaster risk reduction and early warning (pre-disaster - during the disaster - post-disaster).

These two workshops are among 8 workshops organized by the "Sustainable Water Resources Management Project in Abyan Governorate" for Water User Associations in Khanfir and Zanjibar districts over the past months, in which 120 participants from 12 associations participated, as well as 50 participants from local authorities in the targeted districts.
