Completion of a Vital Project to Address Water Scarcity and Enhance Food Security in Al-Ma'afer District, Ta'iz Governorate

Embodying efforts to strengthen resilience in crisis-affected communities, Al-Ma'afer district in Ta'iz Governorate witnessed the completion of a vital project aimed at addressing water scarcity and promoting food security. The local authority received the Water Break Barrier project in Al-Janah village – Al-Sha’ouba sub-district, a qualitative achievement within the "Humanitarian and Resilience Assistance Programme," implemented by the Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF) in partnership with Oxfam, and with generous support from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

This barrier, with a storage capacity of approximately 8,500 cubic meters, is a direct investment in improving the livelihoods of IDP families and host communities in the villages of Al-Janah, Al-Dhahra, and Wadi Abbad, by supporting agricultural activities and raising the groundwater table.

The total cost of the project was 47,617 USD. The works included the construction of the main barrier body, the stilling basin, protection walls, and final finishing. To ensure the sustainability and long-term operational efficiency of the facility, a Community Committee was formed and trained to undertake operation and maintenance tasks.

During the handover ceremony, the Director-General of Al-Ma'afer District – Head of the Local Council, Mr. Ahmed Hazaa Othman Al-Sanawi, expressed his appreciation to TYF, Oxfam, and DANIDA for their continuous support, confirming that the project represents a qualitative addition that contributes to strengthening water security, improving livelihoods, and increasing agricultural production in rural communities.

Mr. Al-Sanawi also stressed the local authority's commitment to supporting and facilitating the implementation of projects that mitigate the effects of crises and climate change, calling on international partners and donors to continue investing in water infrastructure projects, considering them an essential pillar for improving the living conditions of the population.

The Water Break Barrier is one of the specialized projects implemented by TYF in partnership with Oxfam and supported by DANIDA, as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance community resilience, improve natural resource management, and support local development in Ta'iz Governorate.
