With YHF Support: Providing Safe and Sustainable Water for Displaced People in Al Dhale’e Camps

Displaced families in Baja Camp, in Al Dhale’e District of Al Dhale’e Governorate, now have access to a more sustainable water source following the completion of works connecting the camp to the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation’s network. The intervention aims to improve access to water and strengthen the health and living conditions of displaced residents.

Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF) is implementing the intervention with support from the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF), as part of the project “Integrated Life-Saving Assistance in Multipurpose Cash, Shelter, Non-Food Items, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.”

The works included installing a connection line and extending the water network to distribution points inside Baja Camp, in accordance with approved technical standards. Following completion, the network was commissioned and water began reaching the camp’s distribution points, providing beneficiary families with more regular access to water.

The intervention comes at a time when displaced families face multiple challenges in accessing essential services. Safe and reliable water is vital to preventing health risks and improving living conditions, particularly in displacement sites where communities rely on limited or unreliable water sources.

“Water is essential for survival, but for many displaced families in Al Dhale’e, finding enough clean water has been a daily struggle. This intervention is an important step toward ensuring that displaced people have access to safe and sustainable water,” said Engineer Adel Atef, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Shelter Officer at Tamdeen Youth Foundation.

Engineer Waleed Saeed, a representative of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Al Dhale’e Governorate, said that connecting Baja Camp to the water network was an important step toward improving displaced families’ access to water and making the service more sustainable in the camp.

The project’s activities extend beyond Baja Camp. They have also included rehabilitating 13 water points in four displacement camps: Al-Sawda, Al-Sawda Somalia, Baja and Asqa. The work aims to improve the water points’ operational readiness and ensure more consistent access to services.

Approximately 2,500 displaced people living in the targeted camps are expected to benefit from the network connection and the rehabilitation of water points, through improved water availability and support for water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Water, sanitation and hygiene are essential services that directly affect the health and well-being of displaced families. Improving water infrastructure in displacement sites can also reduce reliance on unsafe water sources and strengthen affected communities’ ability to cope with prolonged crises.

Dr. Ridwan Mohammed, Director of the Executive Unit for Displaced Persons – Al Dhale’e Branch, said that improving essential services in displacement sites is a priority for supporting displaced families and improving their living conditions.
