On the 19th of August, the UN designated the World Humanitarian Day this year, 2019 to honor women working in the humanitarian field. Dr. Najiba Al-Mahdi is at the top of the administrative pyramid of Tamdeen Youth Foundation YTF, and performs her duties, as the Executive Director of the foundation, oversees the implementation of programs and projects, as well as the work of the Foundation’s offices, regions and branches in Yemen and abroad.
Dr. Al Mahdi salutes today “every woman working and volunteer in the humanitarian field, and a special tribute to the workers in Tamdeen Youth Foundation for their sacrifices and great efforts, especially during the last five years in various fields of humanitarian work”. Al Mahdi points out that the gender in the foundation is almost equal between women and men and most of the workers in the foundation have high degrees and positions of leadership. As for the volunteers in the projects implemented by the foundation in many governorates are more than 80% besides men, and this embodies the slogan of urbanization in Tamdeen and that the foundation makes positive difference and change. She also says that women are the first to respond to help, and the last to leave the field. The Executive Director of the Foundation appealed to the parties to the war in Yemen to respect the neutrality and independence of humanitarian action, and to commit to protecting civilians, crews and humanitarian teams.
On her part, Bushra Abdullah, a follow-up and evaluation assistant at Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF), spoke about women and human work in Yemen during the crisis in the country, saying: “The celebration of the World Humanitarian Day is back again to encourage us to see the partnership space that Yemeni women have seized, perhaps by force, and perhaps because of the difficult living conditions that resulted from the continuation of the war years ago. She added that “Society was unable to absorb women outside those limited roles and responsibilities that did not fall outside the scope of the household duties to be confined to it, society was as if it were going with one leg. However, once men have became trapped by war, women have made their way in the most difficult circumstances to fight in maintaining the family and avoiding the effects of war, to be presented in many fields and to be launched in different fields.
Bushra Abdullah concluded her talk by stressing that: ” Tamdeen Youth Foundation is one of the most important foundations that provides opportunities for women, and it is also keen to create an ideal environment for women to perform their functions and tasks effectively, which is clearly shown in the partnership even at the level of the foundation’s humanitarian interventions and with the beneficiaries of such interventions.” In addition, Wafa Hamdein expressed her happiness for working as a field officer in the food distribution project for poor and vulnerable groups, which is implemented by Tamdeen Youth Foundation in Al-Mesrakh and Jabal Habshy districts in Taiz city. “I am proud of working in the humanitarian field for eight years, while my work in Tamdeen Youth is a qualitative addition because it is the foundation that gives all its employees and volunteers equal opportunities for creativity, excellence and acquisition of experience and skills,” she said.
On the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day, Wafa said” My thanks and appreciation go to the head of Tamdeen Youth Foundation, Mr. Hussein Al-Suhaily, one of the humanitarian workers in Yemen, and to all the colleagues who exert great efforts to serve humanity and support those affected by disasters, conflicts and wars.
I hope that peace will prevail in my country, Yemen, and that coexistence and respect for diversity will prevail throughout the whole world”.
