In Hyfan District in Taiz City … Community initiatives and competition for a healthy life and a clean environment
Women and men in Al Athawer and Al Ahkoom hamlets in Hayfan district in Taiz city competed in voluntary and cooperative work. They have implemented comprehensive WASH, hygiene campaigns around their homes and villages, and peaceful hygiene and water purification practices. 88 families in the two hamlets have created safe sewerages for their homes. The sewerages were dug with traditional tools and covered with iron and cement blocks. Some of them were covered with wood and rock pillars and well disposed of water consumed from homes.
Community interaction and cooperation with the efforts of 30 volunteers in the project (to address critical needs of WASH) in Hayfan and Al Wazi’iyah districts, implemented by Tamdeen Youth Foundation in partnership with CARE International and with the support of Yemen Humanitarian Fund YHF.
6 months- since the beginning of the project, volunteers have been implementing a home-to-home, school-to-school education program to promote people’s awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, promote hygiene practices, safe waste disposal, and access to clean drinking water.
The project’s community motivation supervisor at Hayfan district Saddam Al Selwi says: “Motivating communities, especially in the countryside, educating them and providing them with information about good hygiene practices helps to avoid disease and reduce spending money on medicines. “The people in Al Athawer and Al Ahkoom hamlets have shared success and embodied a distinctive model of community interaction and desire to change for the better,” he added.
On the way the project followed, Saddam said: “We based on the participatory methodology with the people, so that the people can take the initiative of their efforts and capabilities and they are now leading the comprehensive sanitation.
