Al Suhaily Calls for Promoting the Role of the Agricultural and Fisheries Fund for Food Security
Mr. Hussein Al Suhaily, Chairman of Tamdeen Youth Foundation, Coordinator of the National Economic Recovery Program, and Coordinator of the Humanitarian Action Localization Initiative in Yemen, stressed the importance of activating the Agricultural and Fisheries Fund, developing its resources, and partnering with it by Federations, Cooperatives, Banks, Finance Institutions, Colleges of Maritime, and Local Research Centres, to act as a harmonious system, contribute to Yemen's recovery from the humanitarian crisis, provide food security, and create job opportunities.
During his Sunday meeting in Aden with the Deputy Executive Director of the Agriculture and Fisheries Fund, Dr. Musaeid Al Qutibi, Al Suhaily said, "Yemen imports 90% of its food needs, more than 10 million people are food insecure, and the fish sector accounts for only 3% of gross domestic product (GDP).
He explained that the Economic Recovery Initiative aims to involve CSOs, the private sector, and donors to support the government's efforts to promote the agricultural and fishing sector through modern technologies and renewable energy irrigation systems, expand the construction of dams and water barriers, as well as support the fish sector through establishing wave breakers and landing centers, providing boats for fishermen, supporting fish farming activities, and rehabilitating marine life centers.
He also called on the Government, Donors, Financing Institutions and CAC Bank to support farmers and fishermen to establish their small and medium-sized enterprises, provide financing for agricultural equipment and production inputs, establish competitive local fish markets in cities, and set quality standards; making the fish available and cheaper for Yemenis.
For his part, the Deputy Executive Director of the Fund praised TYF's initiatives to recover and direct humanitarian assistance towards development, and its recognition of the importance of relying on self-potential at this stage to implement productive projects and invest in local wealth.
He emphasized the interaction with TYF's efforts and integration with local organizations in promoting the Fund's institutional capacities, building the capacity of agricultural and fisheries workers to manage value chains, rehabilitate infrastructure, support production, and exports, improve quality and optimize sustainable investment in these resources and wealth.
