Journey of "Thabet Qaid" School: From an IDPs’ Shelter to a Beacon of Science

In a remote village in Maqbanah district, Taiz governorate, Thabet Qaid School was a beacon of knowledge for more than ten years. However, the winds of war blew over Yemen, turning the school into a shelter for those displaced from the conflict.

In 2017, the laughter of students in the school's corridors fell silent. Its walls are a witness to the horrors of war. The war caused the closure of the school, depriving 320 children of continuing their education, putting their dreams on hold and hoping the return of light to their school.

The community did not despair. Although they tried to reopen the doors of "hope" in 2019, the school became a tragic tale; destroyed furniture, black walls, dismantled doors, and shattered windows. So, the school has been a shelter for families displaced from the war for two years.

In 2023, the sun of hope shone again. Thanks to funding from Yemen Humanitarian (OCHA), Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF) implemented a project to rehabilitate 11 schools, including Thabet Qaid School.

Life returned to the school. In addition to all other basic educational supplies, classrooms were renovated, and school bags and supplies were distributed to students.

The project did not stop at rehabilitation, but also included training teachers in emergency education skills, providing psychological support to children, and disbursing incentives to female volunteer teachers in recognition of their efforts.

Principal Abdu Hazem Saeed says: "The school is now safe and convenient for students and teachers. The rehabilitation of the school enabled 480 to access their right to education."

Salma, a sixth-grader, adds: "When I grow up, I want to be a doctor. This is both my father's and my dream."

The project rehabilitated 11 schools in Taiz and Ibb governorates. It enabled 8,037 children to access their right to education and enroll in these schools in safe and healthy environments, restoring hope to displaced and conflict-affected families in educating their children and continuing to achieve their dreams and future.
