“Rural Resilience 3”: Wael’s dream of raising and producing Yemeni honey is achieved

The vocational training and small business grant provided by the United Nations Development Program in Yemen through the Tamdeen Youth Foundation changed the life of Wael Ali Ghaleb, as it gave him the opportunity to establish his own project in beekeeping and produce the world-famous Yemeni honey.

Wael Ali, a Yemeni young man from the village of Al-Saliya in Al-Maafer District in Taiz Governorate, obtained a high school diploma with distinction, and graduated from an agricultural institute, but Wael faced difficulty in finding a suitable job, which forced him to work for daily wages.

The dream comes true:

In 2023, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), through Tamdeen Youth Foundation, implemented the “Rural Resilience 3” program in Al Maafer District, Taiz Governorate, which focuses on supporting rural livelihoods through apprenticeship training, life skills, and small business establishment.

Discover skills:

Wael realized that this program was the opportunity he had been waiting for. He was one of those targeted, and thanks to his background as a graduate of an agricultural institute, Wael chose to join the beekeeping program.

The “Rural Resilience 3” program provided him with extensive training that included life skills, entrepreneurship and small business management, in addition to practical knowledge of beekeeping.

From dream to reality:

Armed with skills and knowledge, Wael started his own beekeeping project. The "Rural Resilience 3" program provided him with ten beehives. Over time, the beehives grew and his project developed, becoming a sustainable source of income for him and his family.

Wael says: “The support I received from the Rural Resilience Program represented a candle that lit my life’s path and helped me get out of the cycle of poverty and unemployment.”

Towards entrepreneurship:

The “Rural Resilience 3” project not only impacted Wael’s life, but also helped 250 young men and women in Al-Maafer District in Taiz Governorate establish their projects, and shaped a new culture of entrepreneurship in the region.”

One of the keys to building resilience in Yemen.

The United Nations Development Program is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in Yemen, believing in the importance of these factors in achieving sustainable development and creating new opportunities for youth.

The program seeks to continue providing support to small projects in the Yemeni countryside, to enable young people to achieve their ambitions and build a better future for themselves and their families.

UNDP believes that beekeeping is one of the keys to building local economic resilience in Yemen.
