“Rental Subsidies Project" Enables Malika to Rebuild Her Life

Amidst harsh conditions faced by IDP households in Yemen, where the prices of basic commodities are high and livelihood opportunities in host communities are scarce, a displaced family from Taiz to Al Dhihar District, Ibb Governorate, is struggling to secure their basic needs, especially with high rental prices.

The father, Fouad Abdu Saeed Al Shara'abi is unemployed, and his wife, Malika Ahmed Abdu Sha'aban, takes care for her four children without any fixed source of income.

As their suffering increased due to the rising rental prices, they were threatened with eviction from their modest home, leaving themselves vulnerable to extreme cold and precarious conditions.

Sighing, Malika stated, "War has impoverished us, and I had to get my children out of school because we couldn't afford it. If we are lucky, we eat dry bread with tea ... Things are really difficult for us."

Fouad sadly stated, "Without work, you rely entirely on others... You are at the mercy of people. If I can get daily work, I can earn three or four dollars a day to buy some food... We were living on the margins of life, afraid of the future, not knowing what would happen to us tomorrow."

However, thanks to "Provision of Rental Subsidies for Vulnerable IDP HHs and the Host Community" project, implemented by Tamdeen Youth Foundation, with the support of Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF), in Al Dhihar and Al Mashnnah districts, Ibb governorate, assistance reached to Malika and Fouad's family and changed the course of their lives.

The family was able to pay the rent of the apartment for six months and provide for their basic needs.

"This project has helped us immensely; it has restored hope in our lives," says Malika gratefully

For Malika, rent subsidy has provided her with some reassurance from the threat of eviction, but she is still waiting to return home peacefully.

"All I want is for the war to end and for us to feel safe again." I want to be able to educate my children, feed them and go back home."

The financial aid did not only benefit Malika's family but also included 600 other IDP HHs in Al Mashnnah and Al Dhihar districts. It saved their lives and gave them hope for a better future.
