Khaldoun Ahmed Ghaleb: From forced displacement to successful beekeeper

In 2015, war forced Khaldoun Ahmed Ghaleb, his family of four children and his wife, to flee their home in the Tawahi area of Aden Governorate, leaving everything behind.

Khaldoun faced harsh conditions in the countryside of Taiz Governorate, where he was forced to live in an abandoned, uninhabitable house, without any source of income.

Challenges:

Khaldoun faced great difficulties in providing food for his family, so he began working in digging and loading stones. During his work, he met Nazir Salam, a beekeeper, who became his close friend. Khaldoun Nazir helped with beekeeping and gained valuable experience in this field.

The dream comes true:

Over time, Khaldoun's passion for beekeeping increased, and his biggest dream became to own enough beehives to provide a stable source of income for his family. But his financial circumstances did not allow him to buy cells.

turning point:

In 2023, the “Rural Resilience 3” project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) came to support livelihoods in rural Taiz Governorate. The project was implemented by the Tamdeen Youth Foundation, and the project included training in vocational apprenticeships, life skills, establishing small businesses, and distributing assets to 250 young men and women in Al-Maafer District in Taiz Governorate to start their own projects and improve their livelihoods with their families.

Golden opportunity:

Khaldoun says, “It was the greatest joy in my life when I was chosen among the targets of the “Rural Resilience 3” project. It represented a golden opportunity for me.”

He adds: I received training and qualification through which I was able to prepare a plan to establish a beekeeping project, and according to the plan I presented, beehives were purchased for me with the support of the project, which allowed me to achieve my dream of becoming a successful beekeeper.

Success and achievement:

Thanks to the grant, Khaldoun has more than 20 beehives and is now a full-time beekeeper who provides a stable source of income for his family. Khaldoun is deeply grateful to the United Nations Development Program and Tamdeen Youth Foundation for their support that has made a huge difference in his life and the life of his family.

Lessons learned:

Khaldoun Ahmed Ghaleb’s story shows how the “Rural Resilience 3” project provided a golden opportunity for young people in rural Taiz Governorate to improve their livelihoods and realize their dreams. The project helped Khaldoun own a profitable business that provides him with a stable income for his family, and also contributed to improving his overall living conditions.

The “Rural Resilience 3” project is a role model for supporting entrepreneurs in rural areas and encouraging them to start their own projects. The project also contributes to enhancing local economic development and creating new job opportunities for young people.
