Afrah: From a War Victim to a Symbol of Hope Due to Rental Subsidies
Afrah Hammoud, a 44-year-old mother of six children, fled the horrors of war in Al Hudaydah to find herself in Al Dhihar district in Ibb governorate, Yemen.
Getting her family a place to live and meeting their basic needs was a huge challenge for Afrah.
As the humanitarian crisis intensified and IDPs' income opportunities had lacked, she was forced to work as a meagerly paid cleaner, thereby fears for her family's future increased. Afrah has been unable to pay rent for the modest apartment she has been living in since fleeing the war from Al Hudaydah governorate.
However, thanks to the support of Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF) for "Provision of Rental Subsidies to Vulnerable Displaced Families and the Host Community" Project, implemented by Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF) in Al Mashnnah and Al Dhahir Districts, Ibb Governorate, from October 2022 to September 2023, Afrah received a six-month rental subsidy.
With this subsidy, Afrah was able to give her family a feeling of hope for the future, adequate accommodation, and basic needs.
"I felt despair and fear for the future, but this subsidy has restored hope to our lives. It has helped us secure rent and allowed us to focus on basic needs and my children's education."
"I am very grateful to Yemen Humanitarian Fund and Tamdeen Youth Foundation for their support that helped us overcome this difficult period of our lives," Afrah added.
Afrah and her children are one of 600 displaced families who received six months of rental subsidies from the project. These families were able to rebuild their lives and provide a better future for their children.
This project is a model of effective cooperation between Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF) and Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF) to improve the lives of displaced families in Yemen.
Rental subsidy is a lifeline for displaced families struggling to secure decent shelter in the midst of Yemen's humanitarian crisis.
