'Urgent appeal' to help those affected by devastating floods in Yemen

Yemeni non-governmental organizations in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) are calling for immediate international support in response to the devastating floods that have swept across large areas of Yemen, exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation and putting millions of people at risk.

Entire communities have been affected by the catastrophic floods that hit the governorates of Al Mahwit, Hodeidah, Hajjah, Rima, Marib, and Taiz. Preliminary information indicates dozens of casualties and missing persons, more than 56,000 homes damaged, and damage to civilian infrastructure, roads, and water supply systems.

We appeal to the international community, including donors and Gulf states, to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected areas. The situation is critical, and immediate action is necessary to save lives and prevent further suffering.

We urge all parties involved in the conflict to put aside their differences and prioritize humanitarian needs.

We also emphasize achieving climate justice and compensating Yemen for the losses and damages caused by climate change, as it is one of the least contributing countries to the greenhouse gas emission process, the most affected by it, and the least resilient to climate shocks.
