Rehabilitating the main street in Al-Qaedah City
In preparation for the concrete paving of the main street of Al-Qaedah City, work is progressing on tamping, leveling, constructing a stormwater drainage system and improving the sewage network.
This vital street is a main artery connecting Taiz and Ibb governorates, and has been suffering from the deterioration of the asphalt layer and the overflow of sewage, turning it into a swamp during the rainy season. This situation caused great suffering for residents and shop owners, disrupting traffic and threatening neighboring buildings with collapse.
In response to these challenges, local authorities have prioritized the rehabilitation of this street in their 2023 recovery plan.
Today, with the support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (SIERY) project, and through Tamdeen Youth Foundation (TYF), local authorities are digging and installing sewage lines, paving the main street with reinforced concrete, and concrete paving for the side streets.
The project will improve infrastructure, ease traffic, boost economic and commercial activity, and address a chronic issue that threatened the lives of the city's 600,000 residents.
We appreciate the European Union's support for (SIERY) project and its role in promoting the recovery of local institutions in Yemen and enabling them to provide services efficiently and transparently.
